Mathematics (currently being updated)

At Wheatfields Primary School we have high expectations for all pupils in maths. Every pupil will be given the opportunity to learn together, develop their own understanding and apply their mathematical knowledge across the curriculum. With the school’s ‘Growth Mindset’ initiative all pupils are encouraged to reflect on their learning, be resilient, be resourceful and work as a team. Pupils will be taught that they will learn from their mistakes and to challenge themselves in all areas of the subject.

Our mastery approach to maths will ensure that time is spent developing and deepening the understanding of a topic, making connections and embedding it in a wide range of contexts

As mathematics is such a key life skill we appreciate the importance of having a deep and contextual foundation in the subject. Starting in EYFS and continuing through all the year groups, all of the pupils are taught maths using methods that support visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners.

Our Maths calculation policy follows the concrete, pictorial, abstract model which enables learners to develop their understanding of each concept.

We aim that all lessons provide opportunities for our pupils to develop their abilities in line with the aims of the National Curriculum, which are to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems 

  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language 

  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions
